México en las noticias: Las campanas de la Catedral

The cathedral in Mexico City was closed last Monday after protestors angrily entered the building and disrupted priests and parishioners. The protestors had gathered in the zócalo (town square) in support of Manuel López Obrador, the leftist candidate who lost narrowly in the recent presidential elections. According to the protestors, the cathedral bells rang for an unusually long period of time (15 minutes), which drowned out the speech of the pro-Obrador rally leader.

This caused protestors to storm the building. Tensions are especially high because some Obrador supporters believe that a high-ranking church official has become too involved in politics, and has expressed inappropriate support for president-elect Felipe Calderón.

Protestors also claim that this isn't the first time church bells have disrupted their assemblies.

The cathedral reopened on Saturday.
